Michel Slomka (FR, 1986)

After completing a double degree in History and Anthropology, Michel Slomka began his career as a freelance photographer in 2010. His work focuses on the ways in which time, memory, and territory interact, particularly in contexts of political violence such as wars, conflicts, crises, and forced displacement. From 2016 to 2021, he collaborated with filmmaker Alex Liebert on a major documentary project about the Yazidis of Sinjar (Iraq), victims of atrocities committed by the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq (Sinjar, Birth of Ghosts), resulting in both a book and a feature-length film. Since 2018, he has been conducting a long-term project on the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp in Poland, in which he argues that beyond a cognitive and cultural human process, memory is a shared phenomenon emerging as a physical reality within the ecology of places (Birkenau, an Ecology of Memory), a project supported by the Cnap – Centre national des arts plastiques (Paris). In 2022, he joined the photography agency MYOP (Paris).
